Buffett Buys EWM, South Florida Realty Firm & Client of The Americas Group

Billionaire investor Warren Buffett entered the South Florida real estate market Tuesday when one of his companies purchased the Esslinger Wooten Maxwell (EWM) brokerage. The deal for an undisclosed price continues the reshaping of the real estate industry here, as a major independent brokerage cedes control to a national chain. Buffett's HomeServices of America is the country's second-largest brokerage and now will take on industry leader Coldwell Banker in Florida.

Coldwell, a division of Cendant, bought Wimbish-Riteway in October and Arvida Realty in April, setting off a consolidation trend that picked off two of the largest high-end and independent brokerages in South Florida. That left EWM as the top luxury brokerage not owned by a chain, a status that ended with Tuesday's announcement. While Coldwell folded the local brand into its own, the EWM name will survive the acquisition, a HomeServices spokesman said.

Buffett's investment company, Berkshire Hathaway, owns the Minnesota-based HomeServices, which is a subsidiary of energy company MidAmerican Energy Holdings (MEHC). Berkshire acquired MidAmerican in 2000 and in a letter to stockholders Buffett promised the unit access to his empire's deep pockets.

''Berkshire stands ready to inject massive amounts of money into MEHC,'' he wrote. Berkshire reported income of $4.2 billion last year.

Thank you for your continued friendship, confidence and support!
